What to eat in Chiang Mai: a simple food guide

Chiang Mai has its own cuisine, different from the central Thai dishes most visitors know. A food tour is one of the best ways to taste it, and it is part of our Bangkok + Chiang Mai package.

Dishes to try

• Khao soi: a curry noodle soup with coconut milk and crispy noodles on top. The signature dish of the north.
• Sai oua: a herby northern-style grilled sausage.
• Nam prik (chilli dips): served with fresh and steamed vegetables. Ask about the ingredients if you avoid meat.
• Sticky rice: the usual side in the north, served in small baskets.
• Khantoke dinner: a traditional set meal served on a small round table, often with a cultural show.

Night markets and street snacks

• The Sunday Walking Street and the night bazaars are good places to snack and shop.
• Try grilled skewers, fresh fruit, desserts and iced drinks.
• Markets run on set days, so plan your visit around your dates.

Vegetarian and Indian-food tips

• Look for jay vegetarian food and say gin jay.
• Chilli dips and curries may contain fish sauce or shrimp paste, so ask before ordering.
