Thailand first trip checklist for Indian travellers

A little preparation makes a first Thailand trip much smoother. Use this checklist a few weeks before you travel.

Documents

• Check that your passport is valid for the period the airline and Thai authorities require.
• Check the latest entry and visa rules on the official Thailand e-Visa website. Rules can change.
• Keep a photo and a paper copy of your passport, tickets and hotel bookings.
• Buy travel insurance.

Money

• Thailand uses the baht. Carry some cash for markets, street food and small shops.
• Tell your bank you are travelling abroad and check the charges on your card.

Phone and power

• Plan mobile data: a local SIM or an eSIM is usually cheaper than roaming.
• Thai sockets take flat and round two-pin plugs. Carry a universal adapter if your chargers have Indian three-pin plugs.

What to pack

• Light cotton clothes and comfortable walking shoes that are easy to remove at temples.
• A scarf or light shirt to cover shoulders, and trousers or a long skirt for temples.
• Sunscreen, a hat and a refillable water bottle.
• A light rain jacket between May and October.
• Any regular medicines, in their original packaging.

Temple etiquette

• Cover your shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes before entering temple buildings.
• Do not point your feet at Buddha images, and do not climb on statues.
• Speak respectfully about the Thai royal family. Disrespect is a serious offence in Thailand.

Getting around safely

• Agree the fare before getting into a tuk-tuk, or insist on the meter in a taxi.
• Use your package transfers for airport runs, so you do not negotiate after a long flight.
• Keep your valuables close in busy markets.
